Merlion Park
The Merlion, a mythical creature with a lion's head and a fish's body, is a national icon. Installed on 15 September 1972, the eight-metre tall Merlion sculpture, situated at the mouth of the Singapore River, is a favourite among photographers and visitors. Legend has it that Sang Nila Utama, the Palembang king who discovered the island of Temasek, first caught sight of a lion on the island. So amazed was he at its grace and strength that he renamed the island Singapura, or 'Lion City'
